GREAT TURNOUT FOR CITY UPDATE ON ALAMEDA-PARROTT INTERSECTION UPDATE AUGUST 22

Thanks to the ~35 people who participated in the City's August 22 community update on their plans for the Alameda-Parrott intersection. You can view the recording of the Zoom meeting at: https://www.cityofsanmateo.org/3129/Baywood.

After reading this article and reviewing the above recording, please take the following survey by September 15 to share your preferences for how you want the intersection to look: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/baywoodstriping.

Public Works Associate Traffic Engineer Sang Hee Cho, and Acting Senior Engineer Mike Kato, shared the history of the intersection project and the City's near and mid-term plan to improve safety, traffic flow and aesthetics.  Data gathered before and after installation of the current white delineators demonstrated a clear increase in public confidence in using the crosswalks due to decreased perceived danger to pedestrians.

The near-term plan includes striping improvements to existing lane delineation that also will enable buses and large vehicles to turn more easily on to and off of Parrott Drive.  The existing white delineator posts will be replaced with a combination of rubberized traffic-rated curbs & fewer white delineator posts.  The blocked off areas will be highlighted, and the second southbound through lane on Alameda will be reinstalled.

Mid-term plans call for evaluating whether it is desirable to install wooden planter boxes along the intersection to beautify it.  The planter boxes and planting material, if installed, would be the same as the planter boxes at either end of the B Street Pedestrian Mall (pictures shown in the survey).

Your Baywood Neighborhood Association is in favor of installing the planter boxes.  Alameda-Parrott is a major intersection along a major traffic corridor in San Mateo.  We believe the planter boxes would give the intersection a more finished and aesthetically pleasing appearance.  You can share your opinion in the survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/baywoodstriping.

A lively Q & A session followed the presentation. There were questions about the bus stop that blocked visibility from a driveway (This is a question for Samtrans).  There were requests for collision data pre- and post-intersection changes (The majority of the original complaints were about frequent car-pedestrian-cyclist near-misses. These are rarely reported).

Residents asked for a costing of transforming the "islands" into mini-community gardens rather than stopping at planter boxes (this would be very costly...hundreds of thousands of $ vs. tens of thousands for the planter boxes).  There was a question about whether a historian was consulted since this was the entrance to a historic area (There was no historian consulted as the changes are being proposed to a public roadway that has been repeatedly changed in this area).

It is important that Baywood neighbors review the zoom recording:

Then complete the survey to share what you want to see the final transformation of the Alameda-Parrott intersection to look like:

It is hoped that construction can begin as early as November, if weather is favorable.  Neighbors within a 1/4 mile radius from the project site should expect to see construction postcards once the date of the construction implementation schedule is finalized.

In the meantime, please review the recording, take the survey in the next 2 weeks, and send any questions you have about this project to baywoodneighborhood@gmail.com.

NEIGHBORS CAME OUT FOR NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AUGUST 6!

Thanks to everyone who held National Night Out block parties or went to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Center to have fun while learning tips to keep you and your neighbors safe!  There were over 40 parties across San Mateo, several of which were in Baywood.  Neighbors keeping an eye out for neighbors is the best "advance warning system" for deterring criminals and keeping our community safe.

Thank you for keeping your eyes and ears open all year long.  We all need to care of each other!
