SIGN UP NOW FOR 2025 BNA ANNUAL MEETING: FEBRUARY 19TH, 5:30PM-7:30PM
Only a couple of weeks until our biggest event of the year...our Feb. 19th BNA Annual Meeting! Given the terrible LA fires, we have brought in experts on wildfire mitigation, as well as how you can manage in today's tight home insurance environment. Get updated, as well, on 2025 plans for San Mateo and Baywood.
We always begin, however, with wine & hors d'oeuvres, so neighbors and friends can reconnect to start the new year. We will give away a case of wine to an in-person attendee, so show up!
The meeting will be in the Oak Room at the San Mateo Public Library Main Branch on 3rd Ave. and via Zoom (Zoom link will be sent out later this week).
RSVP today: https://bit.ly/BNARSVP
San Mateo's new Mayor, Rob Newsom, will share the City's plans and get your feedback. Speakers from the office of the CA Insurance Commissioner and San Mateo Consolidated Fire's Wildfire Safety group will discuss the state of home insurance in California, and what Baywood residents can do to keep their homes and Baywood safe from fire. Don't miss this discussion!
The wine and cheese reception will begin at 5:30pm and the regular meeting will run 6pm-7:30pm. As always, a case of wine will be given away to an in-person attendee, so plan to attend.
Please register today at https://bit.ly/BNARSVP, so we have enough seats for everyone (last year's Annual Meeting overflowed into the hallway).
The Annual Meeting recording will be uploaded after the meeting to the BNA website.

SAN MATEO CITY UPDATES

SAN MATEO HISTORIC RESOURCES PROGRAM
Thank you to the many Baywood residents who have shared their support of or opposition to the citywide Historic Resources Program that was before City Council on January 21.
After much discussion, City Council reached a compromise that it hopes will address the priorities of our San Mateo neighbors.
IMPORTANT: This meeting did not specifically address the Baywood Historic District proposal. It was a meeting focused on how to manage historic resources citywide.
Council agreed to move forward with the two major elements of the citywide Historic Resources Program with important caveats:
a) Develop A Historic Context Statement. This is a high-level informational statement that will be created with research and community input, and outlines what our community believes is historically important in San Mateo. It was described as a high-level “history report” on San Mateo.
Importantly, this will not identify any individual buildings or call for the creation of any historic districts. Nor will it interfere with any of San Mateo’s existing zoning or building regulations, e.g. Measure T, that are designed to increase housing stock, especially affordable housing, in San Mateo. This Context Statement will be used to inform future land use planning so that decisions made can ensure vibrant growth while acknowledging San Mateo’s history; and
b) Update San Mateo’s Historic Preservation Ordinance. The City’s current ordinance was written in 1995 and does not account for the many trends and regulations in land use and historic preservation made since then.
This ordinance, developed with public input, will clarify how a building is classified as “historic” in San Mateo and detail any specific local requirements related to its management, e.g. gaining permits for substantial renovation.
Importantly, City Council agreed that owner consent would be required for buildings to be registered as historic individually or as part of a historic district. This was added to address concerns raised by many constituents about government overreach.
The San Mateo Historic Resources Program, expected to take 14-16 months, will begin with internal research and analysis. Community outreach will occur at several points during the process. More specific dates will be shared as they are available. Everyone is encouraged to participate in these public meetings. The goal is to achieve the right balance between ensuring our future is strong and welcoming, while also celebrating our history.
