BAYWOOD BULLETIN LABOR DAY EDITION

THIS WEDNESDAY SEPT. 6TH: GIVE YOUR FEEDBACK!

SAN MATEO'S GENERAL PLAN 2040

Join The City of San Mateothis Wednesday, Sept. 6th, 5:30pm-8pm, at the Main Library Branch on 3rd to share your opinions on our City's future: housing and development, traffic, open space, public safety, our downtowns, seniors, youth and families...and so much more! In addition to the Citywide presentation, this Wednesday's Town Hall will have a special focus on District 1 (our District) and the City's plans to strengthen our Downtown and protect us from floods and wildfires

Our community and City staff have been working together for 5 years on this General Plan. Many of you have come to meetings and sent in comments on issues like housing, traffic, climate change and flooding, parks and recreation, traffic and how we grow as a city. Thank you.

This Draft General Plan is the result of all that work. The City wants feedback. How well does it reflect your ideas? What policies and actions should be a top priority for the City? It is important you share your feedback on the Draft General Plan before it is finalized.

If you can't make it this Wednesday, please join one of the other Town Halls about the General Plan 2040 that include time for questions and a follow-up discussion where attendees can share feedback. Each in-person Town Hall will have a focus on a particular District (Baywood is in District 1), but you can attend any/all of them.

This is a great time for families, new neighbors or anyone living in Baywood to meet old friends, make new ones and enjoy beautiful Baywood. The 49ers have an away game that morning, so we hope all you football fans will show up:-)

Many thanks to our wonderful host, Baywood Elementary School Principal Amanda Driscoll. Thanks also to Amici's for always keeping us happy and well-fed.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our Baywood Summer Social, Sunday, September 10, 2pm-4pm at Baywood Elementary School!

TAKING A BREAK ON BAYWOOD COFFEE SOCIALS

We've had a great time getting to know many Baywood neighbors at our monthly Baywood Coffee Socials. Given the success of the recent tour of St. John's Cemetery, though, we've decided to pause the Coffee Socials and focus on organizing unique gatherings for you in Baywood and around San Mateo. As a result, there won't be a Coffee Social September 2nd at Bay Tree Park or on future 1st Saturdays.

Instead, we are working on a tour for Baywood residents of the San Mateo Police Department and another St. John's Cemetery tour. We want Baywood residents to enjoy the many wonders of Baywood and San Mateo. Please send us any ideas for places for future gatherings to baywoodneighborhood@gmail.com.

Never fear, though...you still can get great coffee at 3 Bees Coffee and delicious pastries at Draegers. So what are you waiting for?

SAN MATEO CITY UPDATES

STORMWATER AND FLOOD PROTECTION PLAN APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL; $3 MILLION DOWNPAYMENT APPROVED TO PREPARE FOR WINTER STORMS

At the August 21st City Council meeting, after a detailed presentation, the Council approved $3 million to fund repairs to the City's infrastructure and increased maintenance work to prepare San Mateo for this winter's storms. Full details about the Community Storm and Flood Protection Initiative, developed in collaboration with San Mateo residents, can be found at https://www.cityofsanmateo.org/2288/Community-Flood-Storm-Protection-Initiat.

The results of this investment will benefit all San Mateo neighborhoods, including Baywood, where we suffered damage in January when San Mateo Creek overflowed onto Arroyo Court.

While this is a major step forward, the funding will cover less than half of what is needed to make the necessary long-term capital improvements. A November mail-in ballot initiative will ask voters to approve a $8/month fee to cover ongoing stormwater insfrastructure maintenance ( https://www.cityofsanmateo.org/DocumentCenter/View/91687/San-Mateo-Stormwater-Notice---Final?bidId= ). Additional capital improvement project funding also will be sought from the State and Federal governments.

These are large sums, but they are directed at keeping San Mateo safe. This is the fundamental duty of the City Council and City Staff.
