BAYWOOD BULLETIN JULY 2021 EDITION

HAVE FUN AND GET SAFER AT NATIONAL NIGHT OUT, TUESDAY AUGUST 3RD

National Night Out is the annual celebration of Neighborhood Watch, a national program where neighbors get crime trends and safety information through community alerts and neighborhood discussions about local safety issues. Neighbors are the best protection for Baywood! We know what’s happening with our neighbors and when something isn’t “right.” We can be “eyes and ears” for San Mateo Police. If you are part of a Neighborhood Watch block, plan to throw a party on Tuesday evening, August 3rd, to connect with your neighbors. If you register your party by this Tuesday, July 27th here, a San Mateo Police officer will come to your party to answer your safety questions and share the latest on San Mateo and Baywood crime trends. They may even bring one of their great K-9 furry friends! Families and children are most welcome! If you aren't part of a Neighborhood Watch block, please stop by our Parrott Drive Neighborhood Watch party: TIME: Tuesday, August 3rd, 6PM-7PM PLACE: Home of Lisa Diaz Nash and Michael Nash, 450 Parrott Drive RSVP: LISADNASH25@GMAIL.COM (so we can have enough snacks for everyone!) Wherever you celebrate National Night Out, have fun, stay safe and get smarter about how to keep your home and Baywood protected!

2021 BAYWOOD YARD SALE A SUPER SUCCESS!

Thank you to everyone who participated in the Baywood Yard Sale this past weekend! This was our biggest sale ever, and nearly thirty homes participated! It was a successful event with great weather, crowds, and fun.

We are so glad we were able to continue this tradition after missing last summer due to COVID-19. We cannot wait for many more great events coming up this year. We're working on the return of the annual Baywood Social in September, hopefully back at Baywood Elementary, so stay tuned!

The City of San Mateo is also hosting a yard sale! It will take place on July 31st. So, if you didn’t sell all your treasures last Saturday, you have another chance! Read more about the event and how to get involved at https://www.cityofsanmateo.org/3034/Citywide-Yard-Sale.

FINAL CENTRAL PARK THURSDAY MUSIC CONCERTS!

JULY 29TH: BUD E. LOVE (PARTY/SWING BIG BAND)

AUGUST 5TH: POP FICTION (PARTY BAND)

San Mateo has been celebrating in Central Park and you have two more chances to join! Plan to arrive early to grab a good spot.

The San Mateo Central Park Summer Concert Series on Thursday nights, 6pm-8pm, is the place to go to picnic, dance and celebrate summer with all your favorite bands. Disco, Reggae, Latin Rock...you name it, they play it. The last two concerts of the summer will be this Thursday, July 29th (Bud E. Love, Party/Swing Big Band) and Thursday, August 5th (Pop Fiction, Party Band). While you are there, stop by the tents along the edge of the Central Lawn and visit with San Mateo Parks and Recreation, Fallen Heroes Memorial volunteers and the San Mateo United Homeowners Association (SMUHA). Rumors are that SMUHA will be giving out kids' treats and play toys to celebrate its 50th Anniversary! For all the details, check out https://www.cityofsanmateo.org/1367/Central-Park-Music-Series. See you at Central Park!

SIGN UP TODAY TO BE PART OF A SAN MATEO PUBLIC LIBRARY STORYWALK (C)!

Our San Mateo Public Library would like to partner with Baywood this August to host a STORYWALK (c) for families, children and all readers. STORYWALK (c) is a fun and simple program that has been run by libraries across the country. Residents along a street(s) in a neighborhood put up signs in their front yard with a page from a well-loved children's story. As you walk from house to house, you get to read the entire story. A map is provided so you know where all the STORYWALK(c) signs are. This is of particular fun to young children, but any lover of books can join in and STORYWALK (c) is guaranteed to put a smile on your face! We've all done a lot more neighborhood walking during COVID...let's keep that habit going in a new and enjoyable way! We will need a minimum of 15 homes, and a maximum of 34 homes, to conduct a STORYWALK (c). All you have to do is put a sign in your front yard. The Library and BOIA take care of the rest. Please email us at baywoodhomeowners@gmail.com if you would like to take part in a Baywood STORYWALK (c) this August. This is another great way to bring our community together, so we really hope you will raise your hand for STORYWALK(c) today!

There is nothing as convenient for people looking in a new area for a specific house than having consistent numbering that is easy to see. San Mateo Police and First Responders also like these painted curb numbers as it makes it easier for them to find you if there is an emergency. This offer applies to either new or refreshed numbers. SAN MATEO CITY GOVERNMENT UPDATES

CITY DISTRICT ELECTIONS OUTREACH SCHEDULE SET. TELL CITY COUNCIL HOW YOU WANT OUR NEW DISTRICTS TO BE ORGANIZED!

After receiving a demand letter alleging the City of San Mateo’s current at-large election system violates the California Voting Rights Act, the City is beginning a major community engagement initiative to transition to district elections with the goal of completing the process by Nov. 15, 2021. While the short timeframe is prompted in part by threat of a lawsuit, the City Council this week approved extending the outreach schedule to allow for use of the latest 2020 Census data and additional public participation opportunities through a variety of in-person and online methods. Creation of the City’s first district election map will transform how voters elect future City Council members. The City would be split into districts, with voters in each district electing one City Council member who lives in that district. The first by-district Council election would take place in November 2022. Currently, voters across the entire City elect all five City Council members through an at-large elections system.

Get Involved & Participate

The first phase of public engagement will be to collect input to help define local “Communities of Interest.” Use our new online Communities of Interest form to share your feedback! View our new virtual and in-person outreach schedule to join an upcoming workshop or hearing. During the second phase of engagement, residents can draw maps for how they think districts should be divided in San Mateo, before the Council considers approval of a final map. The City has also hired professional demographer Redistricting Partners to assist in the process. “Shifting to district elections is transformational for the San Mateo community and empowering residents with more opportunities to determine their election system is critical,” said San Mateo Mayor Eric Rodriguez. “This extended timeline allows us to hear from more residents and use the latest 2020 Census data expected to be released in September.” Learn more and sign up to get involved on the City’s new District Elections web page: www.cityofsanmateo.org/districtelections.

PARTICIPATE IN IMPORTANT SAN MATEO GENERAL PLAN 2040 MEETINGS

You may be tempted to "turn off" since it's summer, but it's more important than ever to share your opinions about how you want San Mateo to develop as a City over the next 20 years. Zoning, traffic, parks and open space, bike and pedestrian paths, public safety, wildfire and drought protection...our General Plan 2040 will set the direction for all these critical topics for the next 20 years. Our Planning Commission and City Council need to hear from all our neighbors on the General Plan...and that includes you! Please plan to Zoom, call in or send an email, and encourage your neighbors and fellow San Mateans to do the same.
